Colgate, Beauty and Brains

Some of you know that Kelly and I get a little nervous when we visit a campus of elite status. Not that we have any reason to feel that way as our experiences at the most competitive academic institutions has been wonderful. But, somewhere inside us it stirs up some butterflies.

However, we were both nervous and excited to visit Colgate. Several years ago, we had passed it on a drive to a New York high school. Overwhelmed at it's beauty we very much wanted the chance to go there, meet the campus community and spread our message. So, you can imagine our excitement when we got the call to come to campus.

Nothing short of our greatest expectations were met...with one exception. We were in the middle of some nasty weather and almost did not make it. Sadly, our precious time over dinner with students and faculty was cut short. We look forward to keeping in touch with the great students we connected with there.

Kick'n it in Chi-town

(Kelly, T.J., Casey and Becca strike a pose in front of the Campuspeak table.)

We got a chance to hang out with some of our buds in Chicago at MGCA, which is the Mid-American Greek Council Association annual conference. We had a blast seeing old friends and making new ones. We even got another chance to drive in heavy snow this month. Us Florida girls are practically expert snow travelers.
This was a great weekend filled with lots of education and motivation. Once again, we were inspired by the amazing things that Greek students are doing throughout the country. So proud to be Greek!!

Cruising 8 Mile with my homie

We had the pleasure of visiting Oakland University today, which is just outside of Detroit, Michigan. Our lovely host, Jean Ann who is the Director of Student Activities at Oakland could quite possibly be the most caring and warm person we’ve met! Meeting faculty, staff and students that inspire us is one of the coolest things about our job.

Then there are the little adventures that we stumble upon…
As we were leaving campus and driving to the airport we passed a sign for 8 Mile. We both felt that under no circumstance could we go to Detroit and not take a quick drive down the hugely famous Eight Mile Road! So, we followed the signs and found ourselves rolling down the legendary highway. Of course we sent a shout out to Eminem and Kid Rock as we drove the strip. The things we get to see and do while on the road! Another perfect day; spreading the word about sexual assault awareness and prevention and squeezing in a little roll down 8 mile with my homie!
Keep'n it real,
Kelly

Beautiful Miami

After surviving the crazy Chicago weather, we were happy to head back to Florida and hit Miami! We spoke at Barry University tonight and were proud to represent our fellow brothers and sisters (pictured above) and honored to be a part of their Greek week festivities. We had a chance to meet some really great people before and after our program, including Mark, our very first Campuspeak intern- which was a total surprise!

Miami was rock'n baby!

Rain, sleet or snow will not stop us!

Kelly and Becca with the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi and the brothers of
Phi Sigma Kappa at Northern Illinois University

After driving through what us Florida girls would refer to as a mad- crazy blizzard, with a little hope, a quick prayer and an insanely firm grip on the steering wheel, we made our way to NIU.(Many thanks to a close freind of ours who gave us a quick lesson over the phone on driving in the white stuff.)
We arrived safe and not too terribly late and were greeted by the extremely friendly and warm members of Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Sigma Kappa who demonstrated the perfect mid-western charm that we've grown to love! These fine folks did an absolutely amazing job with everything. They put on a wonderful event and managed to fill the seats of the auditorium on an evening that classes were canceled due to snow- impressive! They were wonderful hosts and really made us feel right at home. We’d like to send a shout out to our new best friend, sister Katey and to also thank the ADPi’s and Phi Sig’s for the delicious dinner, adorable gift baskets and super cute shirts!
I can’t think of a better way to spend Valentine’s Eve. Northern Illinois University Totally Rocks!!!

Davidson College

We were excited to visit Davidson and to be a part of their "bean bag series" of programs. Here we are straight up chill'n with some of the students who brought us to campus. The lovely and talented Cheyenne snapped this photo for us as well as others (thank you). Girl, you've got some picture perfect talents! We had an excellent time at Davidson and were fascinated with the intensity and commitment to the Davidson Honor Code (be on the look out for more information about this on our web-site www.uniteforchange.com).

"Rape Only Hurts If You Fight It" by John Petroski

The article below ran in the university newspaper at Central Connecticut State University earlier this month. The link to the actual paper, follows the article.

When something like this is expressed we have two choices...get angry and focus on the author. Or, we can get angry and focus on stomping out the violence. For me, it is only the latter that is worth our time.

"Rape Only Hurts If You Fight It"
Most people today would claim that rape is a terrible crime almost akin to murder, but I strongly disagree. Far from a vile act, rape is a magical experience that benefits society as a whole. I realize many of you will disagree with this thesis, but lend me your ears and I'm sure I'll sway you towards a darkened alley.
If it weren't for rape, Western Civilization might not exist as we know it today. When the Romans were faced with a disproportionate ratio of women to men in the early kingdom, they had to do something, lest their fledgling society die for lack of sons. To solve their little dilemma, they did what any reasonable man would do: they threw a festival for their little dilemma, they threw a festival for their Sabine neighbors, and then stole and raped their women. It's quite logical; in fact I don't understand why the settlers at Plymoth didn't do the same to the local Indians--it certainly would have saved on shipping costs.
Obviously, in the case of the Rape of the Sabines, rape was a tremendous help to society. The Sabine women, for their part, didn't seem to mind so much, as they threw themselves between their brutish old Sabine husbands and their charming new Roman ones to prevent bloodshed when the Sabine men came to reclaim their wives. Yet even when society was totally against a rape, the raunchy act has benefited society too. Where would the Romans be, after all, if it weren't for the Rape of the Lucretia infuriating the people to the point of overthrowing their last king, Lucius Tarpuinius Superbus? If it weren't for that event, the world might have never had the Roman Republic for a pristine example of a flawless government.
Rapes glorious advantages are not, however, exclusively found from 2,000 year old examples. In actuality rape advantages can very much be seen today. Take ugly women for example. If it weren't for rape, how would they ever know the joys of intercourse with a man who isn't drunk. In a society as plastic-conscious as our own we are really to believe that some man would ever sleep with a girl resembling a wildebeest if he didn't have a few schnapps in him? Of course he wouldn't--at least no self-respecting man would--but there in lies the beauty of rape. No self respecting man would rape in the first place, so ugly women are guaranteed a romp with not only a sober man, but a bad boy too; and we all know how much ladies like the bad boy.
Ugly women are not, however, the only people who benefit from rape--prisoners enjoy as many perks too. What, after all, could be possibly be more boring than spending years of your life confined to some tiny cell 23 hours a day? Then answer, of course, is spending years of your life confined to some tiny cell 23 hours a day and never getting some hot action. With rape, prisoners never have to worry about that. Instead, they merely need worry about treating their rapist with enough love and respect to earn a quick reach-around.
But if there is one bread and butter reason for why rape should not only be accepted, but even endorsed, it is because our news editors are in dire need of interesting stories for our front page. Bookstore stories? Fossils? One dollar coins? Please. Now, some saucy circle-jerk rape action? Yeah, that's the ticket.
